WELCOME TO DARWIN
| The city of Darwin is named after the English naturalist and evolution theorist Charles Darwin,
who never actually visited the location. Today the city is an important port for trade with Asia and the newly developing onshore and offshore
oil and gas exploration industry. |

two seasons, hot and hotter! |
Located close to the Tropic of Capricorn the city is essentially tropical and has two fairly
distinct seasons, dry and hot from May to October, and wet and hot for the rest of the year. When the rest of Australia is in the depth of winter
Darwin weather is mild, bright and sunny. |
|
| Darwin
is a modern city largely due to Cyclone
Tracy, which destroyed over 70% of all
buildings on Christmas Day 1974. Small
in population relative to other Australian
cities, Darwin offers real cultural
diversity, which is made up of at least
50 ethnic groups. Darwin is quite noticeably
a vibrant and cosmopolitan place with
a young population. |
